Michael Vaughn Plays Santa Claus to Support Local U.S. Marine Corps Battalion
Stuart Kane’s Michael Vaughn played Santa Claus for a local U.S. Marine Corps Battalion on December 15, 2017 at the Historic San Onofre Beach Club at Camp Pendleton. The 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment is part of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, is an infantry battalion consisting of approximately 800 Marines and Sailors. The 2/5 is the most highly decorated battalion in the Marine Corps and its motto, “Retreat, Hell!”, comes from the French trenches of World War I, when a 2/5 company commander was advised by a French officer to retreat and replied, “Retreat? Hell, we just got here!”
The 2/5 was “adopted” by the City of Rancho Santa Margarita. The goals of this adoptive relationship are to provide support to the 2/5 Marines and their families on an on-going basis, both when the unit is at Camp Pendleton and when it is deployed overseas, to encourage mutually-beneficial interaction between the community and the Marines and their families and to create strong and lasting ties between the unit, the City and its residents. Mike Vaughn is the Founder of Team 2/5 RSM, a nonprofit organization formed to work closely with the 2/5’s Family Readiness Officer and enhance the community’s support for the Marines and families of the 2/5. Mike has played Santa Claus for the 2/5’s annual Holiday Party for the last four years.
Mike also serves as a City Council Member for the City of Rancho Santa Margarita, having been elected in November 2014 for a four-year term, and was recently appointed Mayor for 2018.
